About Achilles International-Nashville

Achilles International was founded in 1983 by Dick Traum, the first amputee to run the New York City Marathon. Headquartered in New York City, there are now more than 30 active chapters across the US and around the world. www.AchillesInternational.org.

Achilles International Nashville (Achilles) is the local chapter of Achilles International. Achilles Nashville is second largest chapter behind New York. Achilles Nashville has over 200 registered volunteer guides and over 100 registered athletes. Achilles is a non-profit organization that partners able-bodied runners with physically-challenged athletes, welcoming all to the wonderful world of running! Athletes with disabilities can walk, run or roll to participate in mainstream athletic events in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self–esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life. Membership is free. Challenges represented by Achilles athletes include, but are not limited to, amputation, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and visual impairment. People join Achilles for many reasons and with many goals: to improve physical strength, to build confidence, or to achieve their dream. Volunteer Guides come from all walks of life. Some are avid runners, while others have their first competitive running experience as part of Achilles. Some are physical, occupational, or recreational therapists who work with people with disabilities every day, while others are spending significant time with a person with a disability for the first time at Achilles. Guides help athletes in the following ways, by:

  • Functioning as an athlete’s eyes, ears, navigational guide, and motivator.
  • Helping with special equipment such as a tether or handcycle.
  • Participating in weekly workouts.
  • Providing guidance and running advice, race-day logistics such as pinning on a number, navigating through the crowd to the start line, and ultimately across the finish line.
