U-Haul Presents Achilles Nashville 7th Annual Hope & Possibility® Virtual Race

Hope & Possibility® (founded in 2003 by Trisha Meili, author of I Am the Central Park Jogger, A Story of Hope and Possibility) is the signature race of Achilles. The Hope & Possibility® Race, welcomes athletes of all abilities, from elite runners to walkers to wheelers. This race is founded on the belief that sport competitions, such as running races, unite people of all abilities, all colors, and all backgrounds, an important belief for today’s times. Since its founding in 2012, Achilles Nashville has empowered over 300 athletes with disabilities to participate in mainstream running events. We celebrate and honor those who have overcome enormous challenges and will continue our work to move towards a more inclusive tomorrow.  

Achilles Nashville is proud to have U-Haul as our Title Sponsor for our 7th Annual Hope & Possibility® Virtual 5-Miler and 1-Miler, and the U-Haul Keep It Moving Challenge on Saturday, September 12. A summary of the race options are below:

Virtual 1-Miler or 5-Miler: Run, walk, or roll anytime from Saturday, September 12 to Saturday, September 19 to participate in our first ever virtual run. For local participants you may choose to run the route posted on our website or select your own route. Participants outside the community can also choose their own route. You can submit your time for the 5-Miler virtual run only.

U-Haul Keep It Moving Challenge: An additional feature of this year’s race is the U-Haul Keep It Moving Challenge. This challenge brings together 3 of our Achilles Chapters: Connecticut, Nashville, and New Jersey. This virtual challenge, presented by U-Haul, occurs over the course of three days with a:

  • 5k virtual race with Connecticut Chapter on Friday, September 11
  • 5-mile virtual race with Nashville Chapter on Saturday, September 12
  • 4-mile race with New Jersey Chapter on Sunday, September 13

This triple challenge (12.1 miles total) can be done across the three days (September 11-13) or you can do the combined challenge in one day. However you choose to do it, we celebrate the hope of our community in this virtual challenge. We triple dare you! For this triple challenge no race results will be posted. Your personal satisfaction is enough, along with the swag (i.e, koozie, neck gaiter, 2 medals, and a beautiful finisher certificate!).

This year’s virtual event provides individuals with disabilities and all runners access to a mainstream sporting event while maintaining physical distance in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon registration, participants will simply choose their distance, 1-Miler, 5-Miler, or the U-Haul Keep It Moving Challenge.

Hope & Possibility® is more than just a race—it’s a way to connect with one another, to unite and to celebrate through sport.  We are so excited for you to join us at our weekly practices now!  As you may have seen on our website, our group meets every Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:00 PM at the McCabe Community Center in Sylvan Park. It is helpful to come a few minutes early on your first night so you can get a brief orientation to Achilles!

We will be adding you to our weekly email newsletter. Upon receipt of this email (emails generally go out on Monday mornings) at the beginning of each week, please RSVP for that Wednesday or Saturday practice (when we are training). It is very helpful for us to know who is coming so we can pair athletes and guides appropirately. But please come whenever you can, even if you don’t find time to RSVP. We will always welcome you!

In the meantime if you get a chance please look around our website. There is lots of information for guides and athletes on our site.

Tony Grossi Road Runner of the Year

Tony Grossi was recognized at the annual RRCA Awards. He was selected as the 2017 Road Runner of the Year in the Challenged Athlete category by the Road Runners Club of America. These awards are amongst the top awards in the running world. He was in a category that included:

Achilles Nashville Athlete Starts Own Chapter

Hooray to our very own Hannah Anderson, a former Achilles International-Nashville athlete, who recently moved from Nashville to Greenville, SC. Once there, she started an Achilles Greenville Chapter and now serves as the Director. Our Nashville Chapter is a bit proud of her and her new role and wish her all the luck! Go Achilles Greenville!

Below is Hannah’s announcement on Facebook and Instagram about her new role:

I’ll never forget the very first time I placed in a road race and heard my name announced at the awards… “And now, for 3rd place overall female in the 10K, Hannah Anderson, athlete with Achilles International.”
It wasn’t a particularly noteworthy race or finishing time, but I was filled with a sense of accomplishment and absolutely, totally stunned.
As a person with a disability, ‘athlete’ isn’t a word you ever expect to hear about yourself. Most of us assume that athletic achievement is reserved only for the gifted able-bodied, but joining Achilles proved all of my assumptions – about myself and others – totally wrong. At Achilles, I discovered my true capabilities, found a passion for running and racing, and became part of a community of incredible, hard-working runners, from sprinters to ultramarathoners. Achilles is like another family to me, which is why I’m

thrilled to announce that I’ve been officially named the Director of Achilles International’s newest US chapter right here in Greenville, SC! Achilles is founded on the simple principle that everyone should have the chance to get out, run, and compete in mainstream events regardless of their age, ability, or medical/adaptive needs. At Achilles, we define running as any kind of forward motion, whether that’s independent running, running with a guide, wheeling in a wheelchair, or handcycling. If you love to run, think you might want to start, or know anyone (with or without a disability) who wants to get out and run, you are invited to learn more about the Achilles family!

It’s our 6th Birthday!

Hello Friends!
Can you believe it? Achilles Nashville will turn six on Wednesday, April 18th. It would be wonderful to see you at our birthday celebration. As this is on a regular Wednesday practice day, we will meet at 6:30 PM at McCabe Park Community Center on the 18th. Local Taco is providing chips and salsa and Cakes by Skye will be bringing yummy sweet treats. It will be a fun, festive occassion. There will be a 3-mile run/walk on the Greenway and everyone is invited!
We would love to see our past & present: guides, athletes, volunteers, sponsors, board members, friends, service dogs, and families! I really hope you will join us!

Dear Achilles Athletes, Guides, Volunteers, and Friends

 

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news we learned this morning (March 25, 2018) that our fellow board member, Peter Pressman, passed away. According to the Nashville Striders post on their Facebook page this morning that was informing the community of Peter’s passing, they indicated that he had an apparent heart attack. It seems he was to go on a run with the group this morning and their post stated he died prior to the scheduled run.

 

As you all know Peter has been a HUGE presence at Achilles over the years. In fact, he was one of the first folks to answer the call to assistance when Sarah Hart began thinking about starting this chapter and reached out to some folks in the community. Peter has been right by our sides ever since, as an active board member, as an event management representative, as a guide, a mentor, and a friend to ALL. I honestly cannot imagine our running community without Peter in it.

 

Our Achilles Nashville family would like to share our deepest sympathy with his wife, and also to the Nashville Striders as well. We should all keep Peter in mind during races and “finish upright and smiling” (Peter’s quote after every race he finished). He was deeply loved in our running community and in our organization. He will leave a void in our hearts and “soles”!

The Big Payback

The Big Payback is coming back, and we are participating!

The Big Payback, a community-wide, online giving day hosted by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, returns on Wednesday, May 2rd, and Achilles International-Nashville is thrilled to be participating for the 2nd year in a row. Last year our organization received over $8,000.00 in donations during this day of giving.

The 2018 charitable event will help to support our programs, as well as, celebrate the good work of participating Middle Tennessee nonprofits, schools, and religious institutions. In the past several years, this region’s generosity was astonishing as our community rallied together to raise more than $6.75 million in 24 hours for nearly 800 area organizations.

How does The Big Payback work? Kicking off at midnight on Wednesday, May 2rd donors can donate online to The Big Payback participants located in or providing services to the 40 counties of Middle Tennessee. Your contributions to Achilles International-Nashville could be amplified by additional incentives, bonuses and prizes made possible by The Big Payback sponsors throughout the day. If you are going to give, this IS the day to do so!
